Intensive Care Unit Patient Room
Intensive Care Unit Patient Room
In the intensive care unit (ICU) patient rooms at the UCSF Women’s Specialty Hospital at Mission Bay, we’ve chosen design elements that emphasize patient and family comfort amid the stress of monitors, equipment, and technology. Here, family members not only have a place to sit comfortably at the patient’s bedside, but they can also quietly rest or sleep in a dedicated alcove with a convertible sofa. If they choose, both the family and the patient can have a reassuring visual connection with the nurse on duty; an interior window connects the ICU patient room with the staff area.

Specialty Care

Our ICU patient rooms are equipped with a dialysis connection, an in-room charting location from the boom mount, and a sliding glass door for ease of access and visibility. In the event that a larger opening is needed at the entrance of the room, the sliding glass door contains a breakaway function.
Family Area

Comfortable furniture is located at the patient’s bedside in the ICU patient room, as well as in a dedicated family alcove. The furniture in this dedicated family area is flexible, in order to accommodate overnight stays. In addition, lockable storage and a wireless Internet connection are available in each room.
Room Details

We have incorporated rubber flooring into every ICU patient room for staff comfort and sound attenuation. This flooring is also specifically chosen for its reduced maintenance, as no waxing is required. With smooth surfaces for easy cleaning, coved flooring and minimal ledges, the ICU patient room as a whole is designed for infection control. A hand-washing sink is located upon entrance to the room to encourage use.
Boom Mount

An optimized boom mount is installed in every ICU patient room to maximize room configuration options. Our ceiling-mounted booms reduce the amount of equipment on the floor and increase room flexibility - therefore accommodating a wide range of clinical specialties, levels of acuity, and patient preferences.
Patient Considerations

In moments of respite, a patient TV is available from the boom mount secured to the ICU patient room ceiling. Double window shades provide filtered light or a total blackout, depending on each patient’s specific needs or preferences.
Staff Area

The staff work area is contained within a large room opening for visibility and ease of access. This room orientation allows for flexible, patient-driven working configurations at the patient’s bedside. A charting zone is located immediately outside the room, with a direct sight line to two patients. This zone features room enough for two staff members charting at the same time, as well as a ”med mailbox” for direct pharmacy dispensing.
