Opening 2015
Intensive Care Nursery
Intensive Care Nursery
Both infant and parent benefit when parents spend more time with their critically ill baby. With most infants in private or semi-private rooms in the new intensive care nursery (ICN) at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay, the environment will encourage parents and guardians to stay longer with their babies. Design features such as a recliner/glider in every room, optimized lighting and a calming, quiet environment help the development of stronger bonds and stronger babies.

Family Area

We’ve placed comfortable furniture at the baby’s bedside in the ICN patient room, as well as in a dedicated family alcove. The furniture in this dedicated family area is flexible, in order to accommodate overnight stays. In addition, dedicated and lockable storage is available for the family. There is also a wireless Internet connection.
Room Details

While acoustic wall panels and ceiling provide a quiet environment in the ICN, rubber flooring also attenuates sound, precludes harsh toxic chemicals and reduces maintenance. In addition, our dual window shades provide either filtered light or a total blackout – offering protection for extremely low birthweight infants and the option of natural light for families and staff.
Patient Considerations

A privacy curtain is always available for breastfeeding mothers in our ICN. In addition, there is a breast milk refrigerator in every patient room to minimize the risk of identification errors associated with mass storage.
